Respect for the Diesel Engine
Diesel engines have powered the heavy-duty market for over 100 years. And with good reason! Diesel engine technology proved itself as a durable, reliable, low-cost solution to vehicle power generation. Properly maintained, equipment owners can expect diesel engines to run 25,000 hours or more over a wide range of operating conditions. Their Achilles heel? Greenhouse gas emissions–a non-starter for our future vehicle power needs.
“Everything that gets built today, gets built by diesel engine based machines,” said Matthew Wilson, Nimbus’ Co-founder and Chief Engineer. “Everything you purchase gets delivered by diesel engine-based machines. If it weren’t for their CO2 emissions, diesel engines would take us well into the future. I have tremendous respect for the technology.”
In a way, Nimbus’ fuel cell system is an ode to diesel engines. We took everything we know and like about the technology–low cost of ownership, durable, wide operating range, and highly efficient–and built it into a zero-emission machine. Our philosophy is simple: the fuel cell system shall be as good or better than the diesel engine in all categories.
